Sunburn A Novel Laura Lippman Books

So this is another book a la Gone Girl, Girl on a Train, etc., and for me, this type of mystery is getting old. Like the others, none of the characters are likable and the plots are too convoluted to be even remotely plausible. At least Laura Lippman's writing is good. But I have to admit I'm surprised by this book because you can usual feel empathy for her characters, however flawed they may be. I truly hated Pauline and thought Adam's character, who should have been smart based on his background, was reduced to a wimpy weenie. Had he not been so stupid I think this book would have been better.

Sunburn A Novel Laura Lippman Books Reviews

One of those can't put down books, one of the best I've read. Great characters and the author makes you feel you are right in that little beach town. Lots of twists and turns, had to keep reading to find out what would happen next to Adam and Polly. Polly is a really complex person, was she good or was she bad? Don't hesitate to read this, I know want to read more by this author.
Compared to most of Lippman's work, this proved disappointing. A character study rather than a mystery, with unlikeable characters and unsatisfying story.. If you're new to Laura Lippman, start elsewhere.
Although I was aware of Laura Lippman's reputation as a prize-winning mystery/suspense writer, Sunburn is the first of her books I have read and I almost never got through it. Note that its subtitle is "A Novel" apparently intended to classify it as mainstream fiction. It isn't. Instead it's a homage to fellow Baltimore writer James M. Cain. Cain is best known for three novels (Postman Always Twice, Double Indemnity, Mildred Pierce) that were made into classic films noir and which featured work by such cinema luminaries as John Garfield, Barbara Stanwyck, Edward G. Robinson, Joan Crawford and Billy Wilder among others. Cain wrote about insurance fraud, spousal murder, and other matrimonial crimes.
Sunburn starts of very, very slowly (which is why I almost put it down) and only gains momentum after page 70. The problem is that the main characters aren't particularly interesting and the author tries to gain suspense by slowly -- oh, so slowly -- revealing their background stories. I know the old Zane Gray technique of having a dead body on page one is no longer in favor but still having a handsome Fred Macmurray type notice a sun tanned redhead . . .
Bottom line wait for the movie or limited series on tv.
Wow, wow, wow! If you love noir, prepare to love this novel. Lippman has outdone herself. SUNBURN will burn in your memory long after you finish reading it. Extraordinary character development, a mystery that's as twisted as yarn in cat claws. My top novel so far this year--and maybe this decade. A contemporary writer of Dorothy B. Hughes stature and talent. Bravo, Laura.
The online reviews were convincing so I bought the book. The way I rate books is whether I find myself thinking about them the day after I have read them. Not this one.
What Fun!
I love Laura Lippman’s books, although for whatever reason I haven’t read her in a few years. Sunburn is such a delight, such a wonderful series of puzzles only solved at the end, that it actually completely took my mind off the truly dismal state of the world. I loved it! And I will go back now and read the books she wrote that I have missed.
Sunburn by Laura Lippman is a roller coaster from the start. Pauline a.k.a. "Polly" has rolled into Delaware with her husband and daughter. Adam rolls into Delaware with secrets of his own that surround Polly. These two meet, not by chance of course, and from there the ride begins.

Polly has a past that slowly comes to light in snippets here and snippets there. Sometimes I was begging for the pieces to just all be on the table, so the story could progress. Though this book comes in at under 300 pages, I felt the pace was a little slower at times than it needed to be.

Both characters were not really that likable, but that is something I can deal with if the plot moves fast enough.

Though I gave this book 3 stars I enjoyed it, but not as much as I do most suspense novels. However, I enjoyed the author's writing and would lend this book out for those who want a shorter summer read for upcoming vacations!
So this is another book a la Gone Girl, Girl on a Train, etc., and for me, this type of mystery is getting old.
